Skip level Meeting: One-on-One

As commonly said, a skip level meeting is one where a manager's manager meets with employees to discuss department concerns, obstacles, opportunities for improvement, etc. with a focus on maintaining and/or improving overall communication.

To check the pulse of the floor and to know what is going around, skip level meetings are said to be an acute tool. It helps in achieving business objectives accurately as through help of this meeting we know exactly who is doing what:

We can know about:

  • What managers/leaders are doing
  • Feedback from the team about their team leads/managers for their improvement.
  • Trust factor with those lower in your organization so they stay engaged and contributing.
  • Any miscommunication happening between levels
  • Values and vision can be communicated & implemented across organization

If we can spend little time to get these insights then apart from getting the information, interaction will increase, employees will feel more engaged and secured. A level of trust will be developed amongst the team members. It is one of the important factor for employee engagement.

Not necessarily we will get 100% true and accurate information but speaking to variety of team members can give us brief opinion, overview and pattern which we can use for taking decision. For conducting skip level meetings, facilitator should be adequate with skills and knowledge.

It can happen a manager to feel demoralized by skip level meetings if they thought it was just to check up on them. That’s why you need to frame it as positive and clearly state your true intentions.

If you haven’t built a relationship with many of your skip level team members, they may be surprised or concerned about you wanting to meet with them. They may wonder if they’re in trouble or did something wrong.

That’s why going into the meeting you should set their expectations, too.

Planning and scheduling the meeting is crucial part of such meetings. Employees should be informed well in advance about the timings, agenda and about the facilitator of the meeting. Hence they can prepare themselves prior to the meeting and openly speak-up and share their concerns. It is equally important that anyone do not feel awkward so during the first skip level build rapport is necessary for making them comfortable about such meetings.

Overall Skip level one-on-one meeting can help in building trust, keeping employees retain and engaged, fix the small problems, to get to know the ideas and opinions and feedback of each in a detailed manner. It is also advised to maintain a detailed account of all the details of such meeting.
